Another IR study along the Columbia Gorge scenic highway. I've pretty much mapped that road by now...

This is an awesome shot that I think the IR might have fucked up. I don't know if this came through in post processing, but if you look at the center bottom of the photograph, and the foliage along the median, a lot of it blurs together. The definition is lost there.

I don't know if that was an artistic effect you were going for, but in my opinion it typifies an effect that permeates throughout the whole picture, and stops this work from being an actual finished piece. Of course, one could make the argument that experimentation, and art in general does not function or exist ontologically without consistent change, but performance is an instant, and if it's not well rehearsed and defined in that instant, than I don't think you could call it finished.

I miss the definition of your works from the St. Helens piece, and some of the other work you did around the Columbia.

That's my take. If you disagree, I want to know what your thinking is on it.

I think you're right about the loss of definition in the bottom middle, that's probably due to the fact that I had intermittent light as I took this. IR needs bright sunlight to get the best contrast throughout a piece, so there's always the possibility I'll try to take this shot again when the sun is brighter.

I would argue, however, that this piece wouldn't be successful without IR -- the paleness of the vegetation contrasting with the tracks, road, and sky is not something that visible light could deliver. From both a palette and contrast standpoint those are key elements.
